I’ve spend years walking thinking I did everything right in the morning, but the entire day I would feel not awake & still tired. I would wake up and in three steps I was done with my morning routine. Breakfast, brush my teeth & change clothes. Little did I know that adding little things & changing my morning routine just a tiny bit would help me intensely with how I would be feeling that day. To discover what I included in my morning routine to wake up and feel way more refreshed, continue reading!
The first thing you should always do, is ‘splashing’ your face with cold water. The moment you get out of bed, cleansing your face with water will make your face feel, immediately, more awake. After doing this, you will be able to handle the day better and you will become more alert.
After splashing your face, do something that takes up one minute of your day but will help you tons the next 23 hours and 59 minutes. Stretch. Simply standing straight, bending forward and trying to touch your toes or make yourself as tall as possible with your arms, stretching should be an essential part of your routine (night & day). Trust me, your body will be ready for the day that is about to start.
Once you are out of bed and have done the previous two things, drink a glass of water. The best is to drink your first glass of water 30 minutes before you have breakfast. Drinking water helps your body wake up in general and to prepare itself for the food that will be entering your stomach soon. And if you drink a glass of water when you wake up, you already start the day off with being hydrated and hydration is, throughout the day, very, very important. So, bonus!
A lot of your days are, probably, busy. Running around, having to do chores, socializing, it sometimes gets a little too much. That is why it is crucial to meditate or do a breathing exercise in the morning. When everything is still calm, sit down and breathe. Apps like Pacifica or Calm can help you find your favorite meditation or perfect breathing exercise or you can try a different one out every morning. Youtube is a great help as well. This way, you start your day off calm and you are in the moment.
Meditating is a great way to calm down and start the day off relaxed, but something that wakes you up and gives you a refreshed & relaxed feeling is working out/yoga. These two are quite different but you can adjust it to your own needs & abilities. Working out adds a massive level of energy to your day & your spirit and you will, trust me, feel so much more energized and relaxed afterwards. The best is of course when you sweat a little bit! To read more about the advantages of exercising, read my article fully dedicated to why exercising is good for you! Yoga can be a little more calmed down but it can be extremely challenging as well. Plus, working out and yoga are obviously good for your physical health and body. Youtube & Google are great research platforms for good workouts & yoga exercises. I personally combine a workout with yoga and for me, it takes about 15/20 minutes every morning, but you can make it as short or long as wanted!
Meditating PLUS working out might seem like they take a lot of time, but simply waking up 30 minutes earlier can give you enough space to do something ‘simple’!
Even if you haven’t worked out or practiced yoga, taking a quick shower is good for your muscles & your level of wakefulness. Besides, you’ve sweat while being asleep so it is an excellent idea to shower the sweat off!
Something that might seem normal to you, but is forgotten or ignored by many, is having breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it gives you an energy boost so you can rock the upcoming 24 hours. If you normally can’t eat in the morning, try out different foods than you eat usual, such as, for example, yogurt, oats or toast. Even a small bowl of yogurt with fruit in it gives you energy and is healthy. You can get inspiration on sites like Pinterest.
Last but not least, something that applies to the entire day but what you can start with in the morning, is drinking enough water and eating enough fruit. I’ve already talked about the water but, as I mentioned earlier, you can eat one piece of fruit already in your yogurt, or on your sandwich. This way, you subtly eat something vital already. Starting in the morning with a piece of fruit and water/tea, it is easier to continue the good work throughout the day. This is just a small reminder that hydration & vitamins are very important to live a healthy life!
These 8 things you should include in your morning routine will wake you up (my fingers are getting tired of writing the word ‘wake’ in this article but hopefully you aren’t tired of reading it:) and hopefully get you through the next 24 hours, so you will not feel like a wreck the entire day.
